Dr. James P. & Marian A. Craven Scholarship Fund
The Craven Family has a long history at St. Ignatius. It all started when Peter and Lena Madden moved to Portland and married in 1913. They had five children: Kenneth, Marian, Lorraine, Helen and Robert. Sadly, Lorraine died of rheumatic fever when she was an infant. The other four children all attended and graduated from St. Ignatius, the first in 1929 and the last in 1939. Marian Elizabeth, our mother, graduated from St. Ignatius in 1932 (see picture).
Marian Madden later married James Patrick Craven at St. Ignatius Church on June 17, 1943. Jim and Marian Craven had nine children: Judy, Patty, Sheila, Joan, Tim, Doug, Mike, Pete, and Kathleen (see picture). Kathleen died of leukemia when she was 3 1/2 years old on September 29, 1964. Father Richard Bradley, a close family friend, presided over the funeral on October 3rd. His sermon was titled, “And a Little Child Shall Lead Them”. Kathleen’s four brothers were the altar servers for the funeral (see picture).
All nine children were baptized and eight received both their First Eucharist and Confirmation at St. Ignatius. The eight surviving children all graduated from St. Ignatius School, the first in 1958 and the last in 1970. Judy, the oldest, celebrated her 50th
Grade School Reunion in May 2008. Four of the children, Judy, Sheila, Joan and Pete were also married at St. Ignatius.
Dr. James Craven practiced medicine in Portland for 38 years. He cared for the Holy Name Sisters, the Jesuit Priests and many parishioners of St. Ignatius. Our Dad was a loyal supporter of the Jesuits. It was a common event to have a priest over for Sunday dinner at our house on Woodward Street. A few of the priests who dined with us were Fr. Henry Schultheis, Fr. Mike McHugh, Fr. Tom Williams, Fr. Ken Krall, Fr. John Thatcher, Fr. Richard Bradley, and Fr. John Hanses. Hanses later married Pete and Sheila Craven Riehl in August 1967.
During October, the month of the rosary, our Dad had us say the rosary as a family every evening. You can imagine how difficult it was on Halloween night, but we did. To this day, Tim remembers saying the rosary during the Columbus Day storm in 1962. Our Dad also went to the St. Ignatius Men’s Retreat every year, and upon his return he would always ask us if we could see his halo. We proudly told him we could. Our Dad also belonged to the Holy Names Society. He always went to Mass on Holy Names Sunday with the other men and to the breakfast that followed.
Our family enjoyed spending time with the Custer family of St. Ignatius. Since the Custer family has 13 children, we all had someone to play with and had many good times at the VanVeen House in Rockaway, Oregon.
Sheila Craven, third child, married Peter Riehl at St. Ignatius Church on August 19, 1967. Pete’s mother, Florence Cooper Riehl, graduated from St. Ignatius School in 1931. Pete’s aunt and godmother, Tillie Cooper Riehl, also graduated from St. Ignatius in 1927. Pete and Sheila’s grandmothers, Lena Madden and Mary Cooper were lifelong friends who lived next door to each other in the apartments across from the church. They were thrilled when they found out that their grandchildren were dating and then married.
Pete and Sheila have been members of St. Ignatius since 1977. They have five children: Lisa, Jennifer, Karen, Joseph and Douglas (see picture). Three children were baptized at St. Ignatius and all five received both their First Eucharist and Confirmation at the church. All the children attended St. Ignatius School, the first graduating in 1986 and the last in 2000. The Riehls had at least one child attending St. Ignatius for a span of 22 years.
Through the school, the family met Sister Edwin, who became a very special friend and is dearly missed. Pete was very active at the school, serving as president of the School Board for three years and coaching his son Douglas’s CYO basketball team for five years.
Father Peter Byrne, our pastor, presided over the marriage of Karen Riehl to Lamont Dabbs on July 10, 2005. Judy Craven Hirning’s husband, Paul, worked with Father Byrne on the Parish Council at St. Joseph’s Church in Seattle in the 1980s. Paul died suddenly in 1996 and Father Byrne presided over the funeral. Also, Pete Craven was the Financial Advisor for the St. Ignatius Foundation when it first started in the 1980s.
St. Ignatius was an important part of our parents’ lives and continues to be a vital part in our lives today. When they passed away, they requested that mourners give to the St. Ignatius Foundation. St. Ignatius will remain close to our hearts for many years to come.
